Extremism & the Workplace: Threat Assessment & Management of Grievance-fueled Violence Featuring the WAVR-21

This program was delivered in June, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of a three-day training on Extremism and Grievance-fueled Violence in the Workplace.

The training addresses extremist beliefs and radicalization both broadly and in a narrower workplace context.  Characteristics and behaviors suggestive of impending violence and characteristics that increase an individual’s susceptibility to extremist messaging and likelihood of mobilizing to violence are addressed. The training also provides an introduction to the WAVR-21 (Workplace Assessment of Violence Risk), a structured professional judgment instrument for the assessment of workplace and campus targeted violence risk, and demonstrates the application of the WAVR-21 to behaviors of concern related to extremist beliefs.

Students will be supported to:

• Describe bases for extremist beliefs
• Identify warning behaviors for targeted violence
• Explain characteristics that increase a person’s risk for engaging in violent action
• Identify how the WAVR-21 provides a road map to threat assessment in the workplace and on campus
• Discuss ways in which extremism may contribute to targeted violence
• Explain the utility of the WAVR-21 in assessing cases involving extremism
